Colours and Design: This Afghan Mamluk Rug has an understated colour scheme. The colours consist of duck-egg, beige and rust. The colours change depending on the viewing angle – this is illustrated in the photos. This phenomenon is created by the pile nap/pile direction. It shows the classic geometric Mamluk medallion design with a field decorated with an abundance of geometric forms surrounded by a botanic theme main border. The fringes are attractively finished: they are bunched and bound with soft colour wrappings. Condition/Age: New. Additional Information: The original Mamluk Rugs date from the Fifteenth Century. Made in Cairo, the surviving Mamluk Rugs are amongst the oldest rugs in existence. They take their name from the Mamluk Sultanate (Cairo) and these Mamluk Rugs were made during the time of the Burji Dynasty 1382-1517. Interestingly Mamluk Rugs feature in portraits from this period. It is thought that these Mamluk Carpets were produced for the Southern European export market. The design of the Mamluk Carpets is distinctive. It features a prominent octagonal central medallion with a field of smaller geometric emblems – the geometry is simply breathtaking! The classic colour palette of these Mamluk Carpets consisted of three tones: red, blue and green (although others with five to seven colours exist). The majority of the surviving Mamluk Carpets are in small sizes – although the nature of the design certainly suits large scale carpets. The pile of this Afghan Mamluk Carpet is hand-knotted and made from hand-spun wool. It is simply glorious to touch! The dyes are natural.
