Description Title: Antique Bergama Rug Size: 2.17×1.09m / 7’2″x3’7″ Origin: Vicinity of Bergama, West Anatolia (Turkey). Technique: Hand-knotted. Material: Wool pile, cotton warps, brown wefts. Colours and Design: Natural dyes. The colours are superb! Terracotta with blue, beige, brown, along with hints of peach and purple. Geometric medallion design consisting of 4 medallions (3 blue, one brown) surrounded with wide beige border decorated with geometric symbols. Condition/Age: It has low pile and corrosion to brown wool as well as historic restorations. These restorations include: a patch repair measuring 43x3cm (see image 10), a small reweave of 4x4cm to one of the blue medallions (refer to image 13) and two small reweaves to the borders of 5x7cm & 4x2cm (see images 11 & 12); the fringes are secured and it has been cleaned. It dates from the late Nineteenth Century. Additional Information: This interesting Antique Anatolian Rug was originally sold by Jolly & Son Limited in Bath on the 29th August 1945. The purchase price of £55 was a lot of money back then, as an average salary was £214 (and indeed, this was before the end of World War Two). It was the equivalent of around £2100 in today’s money (& in an era before VAT existed)!
