Colours and Design: This antique Karabagh rug features spectacular contrasting colours of pink, fuchsia, ochre-orange, teal, soft green and blue with a blue-black background. The design is equally eye-catching showing a floral “gul ferang” theme of flourishing roses decorating the field and border alike. Condition/Age: It is a beautiful rug to touch with luxurious, soft wool pile, silky “floppy handle” and neat weave. It has some wear consistent with age (see images 5 & 6), as well as some expert re-piling (images 7 & 9). It has been recently cleaned and is ready for immediate use or display. It is in the region of 70/80 years old. Additional Information: Karabagh rugs were made in the southern Caucasus. As an area Karabagh is renowned for its variety of rug designs. These can be broadly divided into 4 categories: those resembling neighbouring Kazak Rugs; designs descended from early workshop pieces; Persian influenced designs; and those woven to appeal to Russian and other foreign markets. This piece obviously falls into the final category. This floral type Karabagh rug was developed for the occupying Russian & foreign markets. These “gul ferang” rugs featured French style designs showing elaborate curvilinear floral blossoms. At the time, these would have been significantly less expensive alternative to the costly French Aubusson and Savonnerie imports.
